The lab section will be divided into 4 teams. Volunteers will perform the first step: mixing the dough. 1 General Ecology (BIO SCI 310) Mimicry Lab Handout After mixing the dough, divide it into batches for color and taste treatments. (See chart for the proportion of
dough that should go into each batch.) Each team will make 1 type of prey item.
Prepare the dough: start with 200 g of flour & 125 g of lard. (If the
dough is too gooey, refrigerate it for a few minutes so it hardens.)
Wear disposable gloves.
When the dough is ready, divide it into 3 lumps (in the proportions
indicated in the chart) and place them in separate bowls.
Add food coloring to the smaller lumps of dough to produce deep red
and light pink lumps. Mix the color into the dough well.
To make the model, we will use quinine sulfate, a compound that is
distasteful to a wide variety of animals (it is very bitter). Weigh the
lump of red dough, and add 5% quinine sulfate by weight. Mix well.
