Auto Ionization of Water and the pH Scale: Pg. 656-664 Relative Strengths of Acids and Bases: -the stronger an acid, the weaker its conjugate base, and the stronger a base, the weaker its conjugate acid -strong acid: completely transfers its protons to water, leaving no undissociated molecules in solution -the conjugate base of a strong acid shows negligible basicity -weak acid: only partially dissociates in aqueous solution and exists in solution as a mix of acid and conjugate base -conjugate base of a weak acid is a weak base -negligible acidity: contains hydrogen but does not demonstrate any acidic behavior in water -conjugate base of a substance with negligible acidity is a strong base -leveling effect: stronger acids react with water to make H+ ions and stronger bases react with water to make OH- ions Autoionization of Water: -can act as either a Brønsted-Lowry base or acid -can donate a proton to another water molecule no water molecule remains ionized for long Ion Product of Water: -ion product constant: K

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
