Derrick GutierrezDr. ElderHistory 1023/29/12Two great men, two great presidents, led our nations to Excellency and great success.Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were hard working, intelligent men who were veryfamiliar and who also thought a lot alike. Some people would argue that they have make a lot ofmistakes that affect us still today but I think they did what the needed to do. Through theirdedication to our country and their passion of politics they have made our country better.Woodrow Wilson was President at the time that World War I began. We can look at hisactions and clearly see why he did the things he did. At the time American leaders hoped that theUnited States would be an example of how a world could live at peace. On February 4, 1915, theGermans declared the waters around the British Isles a war zone. The Germans advertised inAmerican newspapers trying to influence Americans not to travel on British ships. But PresidentWilson persisted that under international law Americans had the right to sail on any ships.Without warning on May 7, 1915, the British ship Lusitania was sunk in by a German submarine.President Wilson was getting ready for war and the United States was on the pathway to war.In 1916 Wilson was reelected. On January 12, 1917, Wilson called for “a peace withoutvictory.” Nine days later the Germans declared unlimited submarine warfare because they hadenough submarines to bring England to submission.
