Nico Tagaloa Hoag WRI 110 21 January 2014 Pg. 43, #6 6) In Gary Soto’s narrative “Looking for Work,” nostalgia is evoked throughout the passage. Soto writes from the point of view from when he was a nine year old kid. Soto reveals that he possessed a distorted image of the American Dream as a young boy. He thought money, image, wealth, and fitting in with other white families was the way to be happy. However, now as an adult, Soto realizes that he was rash. Also, Soto contrasts the foods and drinks to represent his nostalgic reflection on his time during the 1950’s. For instance, he writes about eating and drinking beans and tortillas and Kool-Aid, and contrasts that with mentions of Coke and Pepsi.
