Joetta AppiahSara HalliseyENG-10222/02/21Studying our Reading TransitionThe opening does what so many introductions to academic articles do – explain why weneed an article on this issue. He briefly talks about professors who complain about students not reading as a way to justify an article about what and how students read. Do the things faculty say about students (as reported by the authors) ring true? Do you go to class having not read the material? The section “What do we know about Reading”is a short literature review though it primarily discusses findings from natural surveys given to high school and college students (you will take the NSSE at some point!). You can skip a lit review though we’ll talk about some of the survey’s findings in class. The section “How We Studied Student Writing” is the methodology section that describes the experiment they conducted. You’ll want to skim this section closely enough that you can describe how they collected data on student reading. We’ll talk about the reading journal questions and maybe even apply them to this article!
