Chapter 7: Jackson’s Presidency: - Louisiana Purchase: more than double the size of the US, removed foreign presence from the boarders and guaranteed the extension of the western frontier lands - Interest in the Mississippi John Marshall and the Supreme Court: - John Marshall: Ironically the federalist who caused Jefferson the most grief was his cousin. He had been appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court during the final months of John Adams’ presidency. tried to strengthen the central gov’t at the expense of states rights. - Case of Marbury v. Madison: 1 st major case where there was a conflict between Marshall and Jefferson Marshall said the judiciary act was unconstitutional so therefore the case could not be in his possession - Judicial impeachments: Jefferson tried to overturn federalist old measures and appointments hoping to remove the federalist judges Jefferson’s Reelection: - Aaron Burr : accused Jefferson of abandoning the republican principles (Quids) trail for treason - Challenged Hamilton to a duel and shot him to death Difficulties Abroad: - Barbary pirates: Instead of talking rationally or offering money they fought - Challenges to US neutrality: France and Britain attempted blockades on enemy ports & regularly seized ships of neutral
