Examples of degradation due to these forms of development: Mangrove forests are being destroyed in Honduras Peat swamps almost completely destroyed in Vietnam Losses of Seagrass beds, up to 90% in some coastal regions The destruction of coral reef ecosystems due to pollution, sedimentation, direct exploitation, disease outbreaks, bleaching, and tourism Human Activities that cause Degradation Agriculture, extraction activities, and development are the three main proximate caused of habitat degradation and loss and are alos the leading cause of bird and amphibian extinction Also, the introduction of nonnative species contributes to habitat degradation Agriculture Agriculture primary cause of ecosystem change Technical advances, the mechanization of farming and the globalization of com- merce have led to an increase of 265 million ha of agricultural land worldwide in 1700 to 1.5 billion ha today.
