Engineering Design & The Design Process Design is what Engineers do Design makes something new exist Design requires Communication to go from idea to reality What about….. Architects, Artists, Draftspersons, Planners? Engineers who design… Do they have a specific approach? Are they “applied scientists”? Do they perform “Engineering Design”? Typical Responses to a Problem Scientist – what caused this to happen? (What causes an earthquake?) Engineer – how do I solve the problem? (How do I prevent serious earthquake damage?) Neither approach is “right”, they are just “different” “Engineering Method” as defined by Dr. B.V. Koen: “The strategy for causing the best change in a poorly understood or uncertain situation within available resources Koen’s Definition

Using what parameters? • Is new better than old? “poorly understood or uncertain situation” • Always more than one side to consider… Quickly consider the sides to the example: • “We need to drain the swamp…” Example: “We need to drain the swamp…” Why? • mosquitoes • recover non-productive land • need housing space But… • Ecological balance • Impact on subsoil • Feed source for aquifer • Carbon sink and oxygen source...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
