YALE UNIVERSITY Introduction to International Relations (PLSC 111a) Professor Jolyon Howorth “Avoiding a Clash of Civilizations (?)” 20 April 2006 “the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. […] the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will be the battle lines of the future”. Huntington, Foreign Affairs , Summer 1993 1. What Huntington Really Said Conflicts since Westphalia = princes; nations; ideologies; superpowers o End of CW: world moves into new phase: “West vs the rest” Most important groupings of states = world’s major civilizations Western, Latin American, African, Islamic, Sinic/Confucian, Hindu, Slavic/Orthodox, Buddhist, Japanese Civilization clashes inevitable because civ is primary structure o Civilization differences are absolutely basic. Is kind of tribal. o Says civilization is most real, and most violent – but WWI and WWII? o As the world shrinks, problems grow through contact. o Globaization threatens identities Revival of religion as basic glue Universalism = huge mistake. Doesn’t think it is possible to have a universal anything. o He says that the West is on the decline, and others are rising o Talks about regional trade blocs – o This guy says: Major clash coming is West vs. Islam – through this was greatest threat to peace. Modernization producing neither universal civ. nor West.n of non-W. soc.s West’s universalist pretensions bringing it into collision with other civ.s Survival of West depends on re-assertion & re-cementing of Western values o Is exclusion necessary for inclusion? What are we going to hate after Russia? We are always looking for civilizations to hate.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
