HIST 264: Eastern Europe Since 1914 1/27/13 2:28 PM 100 years ago: Age of Empires, WWI is the beginning of the end of this system of  empires Imperial System: Land versus Maritime Empires Land: German (Prussia), Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Maritime: France, UK, Russia 1871 German Unification, rise of the new empire. Changes the balance of power Alliance System:  UK, France, Russia vs. Ottoman, German and Austria-Hungary This alliance system pits maritime empires against land empires World War I: new and modern technology for warfare meets traditional politics  (dynastic with a religious component) German Problem : Rise of a new power too quickly Ottoman Problem : disintegrate too quickly in a way that is not agreed upon by the  other powers (When it falls, on whose terms is it? Who will gain and claim these  newly opened territories?) Changes status quo.
