Collapse of Yugoslavia 1/27/13 2:28 PM 1989 Soviet bloc states all move quickly to democracy (post-Gorbachev statement  about there being no more Soviet line) yet all dependent on USSR Romania faces  a bloody revolution (traditional) ending in execution Yugoslavia influenced by 1989, but not as affected by lack of Soviet line because  Tito had already broken ties and had established independent foreign policy with the  West. After his death—breakdown of state Yugoslavia: Land of the Southern Slavs. Post-WWI creation of a Kingdom of Serbs,  Croats and Slovenes. Occupied by Germany and Italy Croatia becomes a fascist  puppet state. Yugoslavia already destroyed once by military force during WWII Croatia had been independent , far-right Ustase puppet state. Had carried out ethnic  cleansing Role of national questions emerge in 1989 Role of long national memory. During  interwar years, national question unsolvable because it had become a Serbian  monarchical dictatorship Tito’s partisans liberate Yugoslavia after the war create a cosmopolitan/mixed- ethnic state. Promise a “multinational” state and form a federation this federation  breaks down along the pre-existing line Yugoslavia has 6 component states (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,  Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Montenegro) and 2 regions in Serbia  (Kosovo and Vojvodina)  1970s national questions arise because of reforms purge right wing  deviation 1971 Croatians (nationalists); followed by purge of left wing  deviation (Serbian communists purged for liberalism). Revisionism and
