Prenatal Diagnostic Tests Amniocentesis: a sample of amniotic fluid is withdrawn by syringe and tested to see if the fetus has any chromosomal or metabolic disorders. It’s performed between the 12 th and 16 th week of pregnancy (although late in pregnancy, an amnio can determine if lungs are mature enough for birth). The later the amnio is performed, the better its diagnostic potential. The earlier it is performed, the more useful it is in determining whether a pregnancy should be terminated. About 1 in 200-300 women will miscarry following an amnio. Ultrasound : High-frequency sound waves are directed into the pregnant woman’s abdomen. The echo from the sounds is transformed into a visual representation of the fetus. Useful for revealing disorders such as microencephaly or heart abnormalities. Certain Down Syndrome markers are also sometimes seen on ultrasound. If ultrasound more than 5 times in a pregnancy, the risk of low birth weight is increased.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
