Chapter 12: Relational Dialectics (Interpretive) Relational dialectics – dynamic knot of contradictions in personal r/s; an unceasing interplay between contrary or opposing tendencies - Highlights the struggle, tension and general messiness of interpersonal r/s - Bonding occurs in both interdependence and independence from one another - Change is the only certainty - Dialectics is inevitable and are constructive Internal Dialectic (Within a r/s) - Connection – Autonomy (Integration - Separation) - Certainty – Uncertainty (Stability - Change) - Openness – Closeness (Expression - Nonexpression) External Dialectic (between couples and communities) - Inclusion-Seclusion (Integration - Separation) - Conventionality – Uniqueness (Stability – Change - Revelation - Concealment (Expression - Nonexpression) Dialogue Dialogue – communication that is constitutive, always in flux, capable of achieving aesthetic moments Constitutive dialogue – communication that creates, sustains and alters r/s and the social world; social construction
