Chapter 2: Talk About Theory Behavioral scientist – scholar who applies the scientific method (empirical research, conducts experiments) to describe, predict, and explain recurring forms of human behavior - Objective approach – assumption that truth is singular and is accessible through unbiased sensory observation; committed to uncovering cause and effect r/s (explain & predict) - Source credibility – expertise and trustiness of a speaker or writer affects how the message is received, trusted experts will be more effective in their attempts to persuade us than sources we distrust or regard as incompetent - Identification – a perceived role r/s that affects self-image and attitudes; based on the attractiveness of the role model and sustained if the r/s remains salient (noticeable) Rhetorician – scholar who studies the ways in which symbolic forms can be used to identify with people, or to persuade them toward a certain point of view (rhetorical theory, criticism, interprets text) -
