Chapter 8: Decision-Making Processes Models of Decision-Making Process (1) Rational Models of Decision Making - classical theory, decision making is an entirely rational and logical process - first, members notice a problem that necessitates a decision - after defining the problem, decision makers then search all the relevant information that might bear upon it - next, decision makes develop a set of decision effectiveness and evaluate them accordingly for decision effectiveness - decision making process concludes when an optimal decision is identified and decision making is implemented - Nutt (1984) says this is the normative model - 5 stages - Formulation – might survey - Concept Development – generate alternative ways to deal w/ problem - Detailing – subgroups assigned to get more details of pros and cons of options, workability might be tested - Evaluation – information gathered during detailing will be scrutinized to quantify the costs and benefits - Implementation – solution is put in place
