What do we dream about? Dr. Hobson is looking at the EEG tracing from a patient in his sleep lab. The EEG is dominated by delta waves most likely this person is in Stages: 1. 1 2. 2 3. 3 4. 4 5. REM Why do we sleep? 1. Restorative Function 2. Evolutionary Benefit 3. Learning and Memory 1. REM deprive subjects show reduced ability to retain new information!!! 1. But doesn’t happen if deprived of stage 4 ? 4. Berry and Webb (1985) o Speed of cycling into REM correlated with positive mood on following day Faster cycle into REM --> the more positive you feel o Depressed individuals tend to cycle into REM very quickly… perhaps this helps improve mood ? Sleep Disorders About 15% of adults complain (probably closer to 20 - 25%) o Insomnia = most common Difficult in getting to sleep or staying asleep
