Occurs during formation of gametes: puberty in males , before birth in females Meiosis differs from mitosis: 1. Prophase 1 --> homologous chromosomes pair o 23 homologous pairs Vs. 46 chromosomes o Crossing over --> recombination of alleles 2. Metaphase --> independent assortment (random alignment of homologues) 3. Anaphase I --> homologues pulled apart (dup instead of undup chromo in cells now!) 4.
