Lopez Catarina Lopez Modern Times to Modern Times In 1936, the infamous Tramp made his final appearance in Chaplin’s Modern Times. For ten years, the world had already become engulfed in talking pictures, and Chaplin finally had to say, “goodbye” to his silent films and the Tramp he played in all of them. In the cleverly titled Modern Times , Chaplin made his official turning point in not only the movie, but also in his career. Charlie Chaplin’s silent films are probably the most famous in the industry, and with the end to his movies, the silent film industry also made its farewell as a whole. Modern Times uses dialogue, music and exaggerated actions to end not only Chaplin’s silent film career, but the era of silent films. The scene that takes place from 1:13:58 to 1:15:08 portrays worrying over whether the Tramp will be able to sing or not. It begins with his boss at the restaurant saying, “I hope you can sing,” and his lady friend also confronts him with concern. Everyone is now concerned with his singing, as opposed to his overall performance. All they care about is if he gets the words right, not if his actions portray a story. The anxiety in everyone’s actions, faces and the few words create a sense of panic that flows into the audience. Naturally, the audience will become concerned with what the characters are worried about; their worrying about his singing is directly related to Chaplin switching to talking pictures. The Tramp, Chaplin’s silent film persona, has a very difficult time remembering the lines, and he is not focusing on the physical performance.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
