Catarina Lopez Finding the Differences of Emphasis in Sentences 1. The purpose of this section is to distinguish focused/unfocused parts of the same sentence. In this exercise, the goal is to gain a better understanding of what linguistically happens when we put emphasis on different words. a) Sentence 1 – “mayor” is the focused word. Sentence 2 – “new” is the focused word. b) “Mayor” – when in focused position, the word is higher in pitch in louder. The pitch changes more variably than in the unfocused position. “New” – pitch and volume changes when in the focused position. The pitch goes up in the middle of the word. c) “Mayor” – duration when unfocused is .316329 seconds; duration when focused is . 453633 seconds. F0 of focused is 492.597100 Hz.
