Christopher 1 Taylor Christopher Professor Evarkiou Literature 203 July 9, 2013 Objects in Mirror are Not Always What They Appear After reading the novel The White Castle written by Orhan Pamuk, one aspect of the story that really intrigued me was the near identical appearances that the Italian slave, whose name is never mentioned in the text, and Hoja, whose name means “master”, share. Even the Italian slave expresses his amazement of their similar physical make-up. The narrator quotes, “The resemblance between myself and the man who entered the room was incredible!” says the narrator. “It was me there . . . for that first instant this was what I thought.” (Page 13) Later in the story, Hoja and his sidekick sit down and exchange stories with each other so that they can be- come more well acquainted with each other. Hoja realizes that because of their almost identical appearance, they could switch places which could potentially allow Hoja to return to Italy without any issues. The narrator describes their thoughts when they are exchanging their life
