Christopher 1 Taylor Christopher Professor Evarkiou Literature 203 July 1, 2013 ‘That’s Gonna Leave A Mark’ There are multiple instances in the novel Beloved written by Toni Morrison where it is apparent that all the characters are drastically affected by the suffering and trauma that was ex- perienced in their past. Sethe, the protagonist of Beloved, is constantly throughout the story re- calling the horrors of her slavery days from the past back at Sweet Home. The one event that is the most overwhelming to her is the recollection of the scene where she protects her oldest daughter from Schoolteacher, the chief operator of Sweet Home, by killing her with a blade so she will not be seized by Schoolteacher and be held captive as a slave for the remainder of her life on the plantation. The book reveals her thought process when she was recalling the scene where she kills her daughter. She was terrified when Schoolteacher began to approach her for fear of her children’s lives and feelings at the moment are disclosed. “And if she thought any-
