Christopher 1 Taylor Christopher Professor Evarkiou Literature 203 June 17, 2013 Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems One element is emphasized a great deal in both the works of A Room of One’s Own and The Metamorphosis is money. In the story A Room of One’s Own, the author Virginia Woolf states that without money, a woman can not have “a room of her own” to write. Not having enough money causes less creativity and dampens opportunity, which causes women to be more restricted. The narrator of this story explains, “ Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor, not for two hun- dred years merely, but from the beginning of time . . .” The narrator also states, “ A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” She clearly declares that money is essential for women to be successful/successful writers in order to compete with their male counterparts.
