Reading questions for “Against Music” (308-312) and “Day of the Dead” (345-350). 1. What argument does Mo Tzu present in his essay? What argument does Octavio Paz present? Mo Tzu’s essay argues that music isn’t beneficial to our society and presents different situations in why he has this belief. Octavio Paz’s argues that music is important to the poor, in a way that it brings about a luxury for their community and an opportunity to act different. 2. Do you believe Mo Tzu would agree with Paz that spending 3,000 pesos on fiesta celebration is a worthwhile choice for an impoverished community? Why or why not? Mo Tzu would not agree with Paz because Mo Tzu believes the rich are the only people that can afford the luxury of music. A fiesta celebration for an impoverished community would bring about nothing beneficial to the society because it takes them away from doing their duties. 3. Why does Paz believe that the rich don’t need fiesta celebrations? Do you believe Mo Tzu would agree with Paz’s assessment of the rich?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
