Reading Questions: “The Individual and the Pattern of Culture” by Ruth Benedict (pg. 132). 1. What is the individual's relationship to society? How do society and the individual cause each other's prosperity? There is no proper antagonism between the role of society and that of the individual. What is subtracted from society was added to the individual and what was subtracted from the individual was added to society. 2. In paragraph six, Benedict observes that "any society selects some segment of the arc of possible human behavior, and…its institutions tend to further the expression of its selected segment and to inhibit its opposite behavior." In your own words, what does this mean? In my words, I believe Benedict is saying that as an individual, we are molded by our surroundings, backgrounds, and cultural influences that have an impact our behavior. 3. In 3-4 sentences, describe some of the ways that societies define “normal” and "abnormal" behavior.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
