Renaissance- A rebirth of classical culture and heritage that had been lost in the middle ages Used to refer to the historical period. (11) The Great Schism- church was unstable, shows how the Protestants took power over Catholics Simony & Nepotism- Nepotism: practice of giving (spiritual) office to relatives Simony: selling office (12) Sir Thomas More- renaissance author Utopia- Martin Luther- (1483-1546) German Pivotal figure in setting off the Protestant Reformation Martin was given the best education by his parents to fulfill his father’s hopes He felt that God was calling him to a spiritual vocation. This created an internal conflict between what God was calling him to be (a monk) and what his father wanted him to be (a lawyer). One day, Luther got caught in a tremendous storm. He was terrified and was convinced God was punishing him. He begged God to spare his life and promised he would become a monk if he did. A few weeks later, instead of enrolling in law school, he entered a monastery. His father was furious. Even in the monastery, he was still convinced that God hated him. This was psychologically gnawing. Someone recommended he turn to his studies. He went to another university and began doctoral studies in theology and got a degree and joined the faculty at the university. 95 Theses- wrongdoings of the church Sale of Indulgences- sale of forgiveness, give pardon from purgatory, used money to build St. Peters Basilica Peace/Treaty of Augsburg- Established the principle that the religion of the prince is the religion of his people.
