· Allegory of the cave o Where Plato tells the story of a cave where prisoners are chained to chairs facing the wall of the cave. As the sun rises, shadowed figures appear on the wall (from puppeteers who are behind the prisoners) while the prisoners watch the shadows. The shadows appearing on the wall and are the only images that the prisoners know as the world, their personal reality. Because of this, the prisoners image of the real world is mistaken. Once the prisoner is released stepping towards the sun, the prisoner will see new images forming a new reality the “real truth.” Upon recognition of this new reality, prisoners will no longer want to go back to seeing the images upon the cave, entering the cave would be entering a world of darkness. o Sun is represented as goodness o There is a hierarchal movement when progressing away from the cave. · Four causes o Formal what is it? o Material what is it made of?
