Christopher 1 Taylor Christopher Professor Schaeffer SP12 PSY103 Section 1 March 29, 2012 In the first article I read, an airplane pilot was recently charged with interfering with a flight crew and suspended indefinitely. The article stated that the pilot began ranting about a bomb aboard the aircraft and shouted, “They’re going to take us down!” A co-pilot was required to perform an emergency landing in Amarillo, TX once he locked the cockpit door to prevent the pilot from re-entering. As the plane safely reached the ground, the pilot was carried off and transported to the hospital to seek medical attention. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) demands that all airline pilots annually pass a medical exam or every six months for pilots, such as this twelve year veteran, who exceed the age of 40. These tests are given by FAA-approved doctors who are supposed to consider the psychological health of the pilot during their critique. The pilots are also questioned regarding mental disorders, substance abuse problems, and/or attempts of suicide in their pilot’s application for a certificate which is also simply known as his license to fly. However, many suggest that pilots are hesitant to confess mental state issues, for fear it would terminate their career. The FAA should begin to conduct more careful psychological examinations with airplane pilots and even complete a background check specifically reviewing their medical history.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
