King Mikhail Romanov Not very king-like in comparison to Western European kings Not well-dressed Peter the Great Modernized Russia, made it more Western Cut off the beards of orthodox noblemen so that they behaved and looked like  Westerners Built the city St. Petersburg Became capital of Russia until 1918 Built by Europeans to resemble traditional European cities Culture and politics in Russia Reactionary government Until the end of the Romanov dynasty, Russia was an absolute monarchy All the tsars believed God had given them Russia as their own personal responsibility  and land. Further, God gave it to them as He saw it, so no changes should be made Necessary changes in the 19 th  century 1861, Tsar Alexander II was compelled by economic and social upheaval to emancipate  the serfs 1862, Alexander is assassinated Alexander III takes over, extremely reactionary Nicholas II takes over after that, even more reactionary Rejected all modern changes Believed it was his responsibility to maintain Russia as it was presented to him Russo-Japanese War

Russia was soundly defeated Japanese destroyed the Russian navy Results of this war Nicholas was forced to create a parliamentary body called “the Duma”--1905  Institutional inequality 85-90% of the population are serfs Responsible for all degrading hard-labor in Russia Russia was not as modernized as the rest of Europe BECAUSE it had people who were  forced to work as animals Russia viewed peasants as an almost different species than human Drink a lot Highly religious Russian aristocracy Mimics the European aristocracy in a wealthy, ostentatious way Mimicked eating, clothing, social styles Russian middle-class Russia in WWI Battle of Tannenberg, 1914 This battle against Germany goes very poorly for Russia Poorly equipped, trained; poor leadership Nicholas II’s role At the front lines--believed he needed to take command of the struggling Russian army
