We need a standard to justify our choices A philosophical life is a life that has justification for our choices Justification vs. Explanation Explanation: Answer question “how” Justification: Answer question “why” Offer justification in dialogue with others Justification must be public This justification will be evaluated by others, and then revised according to their reactions This makes the philosophical life public—we must share our justifications with others A good citizen is one who comes to the government asking “why” they have chosen a course of action “Philosophy is not a private business of contemplation. Rather, for Socrates, it is a way of life that makes questioning about the right way of life possible.” Theocratic/dictatorships governments make it impossible for us to live a human life We cannot ask for justification under these forms of governments What is the greatest good! —Socrates The idea of good justifies choices in philosophical life
