CMPT 9/14 Crito Continued and Republic Membership in society or social groups gives a person their selfhood The law=justice—backbone of any society Society is the precondition of selfhood “Socrates’ option (death) shows that he wanted to keep a delicate balance between the urge of his conscience for justice and the necessity for having the law in the first place.” Being urged by his or her conscience means that the civil disobedient citizen does have an idea of what the just course of action is, and he or she cannot find that just course of action in the present. Utopian Man Looking for something which you cannot find in the present society Those who participate in civil disobedience are utopian men They sense something lacking (justice) in their society that they will begin searching
