Travis Edwards Dr. Hempel SOC 301 Feb 18, 2014 Paper option 2 Emile Durkheim revolutionized the way we view sociology as a whole. When we discuss Durkheim, we think of terms like social theory and functionalism which is an important viewpoint in society today. Two terms that play a huge role in society today is mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Solidarity focuses on the integration which is shown by society or a group of people (lecture 2/18/2014). This leads us to the question on what the two terms mean and how it is relevant in today’s sociological culture. Kenneth Allan, Author of “Explorations in Classical Sociological Theory,” describes social solidarity as the degree to which social units are integrated (Allan). Durkheim elaborated on the term social solidarity as the blending and organizing of diverse elements or people into a more structural or complete whole (Allan). With further analyzing the term, social solidarity refers to the content on what each individual person brings to the group (the constraint on each individual behavior). Durkheim believes two analogies or concepts refers to social solidarity which is Mechanical and organic. Sociologist concluded that Durkheim used these two terms (mechanical and organic) to explain how social order is established across different communities or establishments.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
