Brazil Introduction o Only Portuguese-speaking country in the region though its population comprises a hefty chunk of the total Latin American population. o Emerged from colonialism as an intact unit o Won its independence from the Portuguese royal family o Pronounced regional differences (economic) The regions in the Southeast (Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) include huge populations and are linked to the global economies, while the rest of the country is poor. o Even though they don’t want to acknowledge it, ethnic and racial discrimination is still really present in Brazil. o The Catholic Church still holds high importance in Brazil. The poorer populations are still protestant. Historical Development o Started as an agricultural society, and became the crowning possession of the Portuguese crown o Mining reinforced colonialism in Amerindian culture, and helped those areas become the cores of the colonial system. o Salvador Minas Gerais Rio de Janeiro Brasilia o When Napoleon invaded Portugal, the king (Dom Joao) moved the court to Rio de Janeiro until he was forced to go back.
