I. Rewrite before Writing – All writers write badly at first. Then they rewrite. Revision is no the end of the writing process but the beginning A. Why Do We Resist Rewriting? 1. Writing is always an act of self-exposure 2. Revision documents how well we write 3. Paley: “We write about what we don’t know about what we know” 4. Barthelme: “Writing is a process of dealing with not-knowing, forcing of what and how” 5. “In the first draft you get your ideas and your theme clear, and you know where you’re coming out. But the next time through it’s like cleaning house. I like the process of making writing neat” Goodman 6. SPONTANEITY—super important. But those who are spontaneous have practiced their craft again and again 7. All writers know of those “special moments.” It is an illusion. And the danger of the illusion is that you will wait for those moments. More revisions are needed to get spontaneity out when inspired moment doesn’t come 8. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
