B. Describe the term “ethnic cleansing” and how it was used to contribute to the killings of more than 200,000 people in the former Yugoslavia. Was the United Nations considered effectual in stopping these killings in early years of the war in Bosnia in 1992 and 1993? What were the circumstances of their success or failure to protect the Bosnians? You do not need to mention cities but rather the circumstances of their protection or lack of it. In the 1990’s, Bosnia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia. It is believed that the main cause of this split was due to the death of Marshal Tito who kept the Yugoslavian people in check. But after his death and the fall of the economy, violence and war began breaking out all over. “Ethnic cleansing”, a term commonly linked to genocide, became a big factor during this time period. Many individuals were being killed ruthlessly and according to an eyewitness account from a U.N. official, there were trucks full of dead bodies and multiple corpses of all ages being taken out of houses.
