10/2/12 Women’s Voices 1. Social movements of the 19 th century impacted the movement for female suffrage in many ways. To begin, the idea of change was planted in the minds of those more powerful; the white men. During the first wave of feminism, civil rights for African Americans were underway, the temperance movement was in effect, along with progressivism and others. I believe that in some ways, the idea of change was imposed by all of these movements so that was very beneficial to all those involved, because it was the seed that got everyone thinking of reform. Unformatted text preview: women’s rights, and they were forced to compete with the other movements on convincing those in power that they were most important. For example when Black men were first to gain the right to vote, many feminists were furious, asking why they gave ‘Them’ the right to vote before a prestigious white woman. There was a further division after this, and many aspects of the women’s movement would have probably been easier if they didn’t have to compete as much. But I also believe that they wouldn’t have had many of the successes without the indirect support of the other movements....
