Preventive Health Care (Health Promotion) Focus is to keep people healthy Settings- schools, occupational health  clinics, community centers,  hospital/community health promotion  offices, physician offices, outpatient  clinics. Reduces costs of health care Prenatal classes, well baby care, exercise  classes, nutritional classes.

Primary Health Care Focus - more disease orientated and  focuses on reducing and controlling risk  factors for disease. Settings:  similar to primary settings Examples:  immunizations, blood pressure  and cancer screenings, poison control  information, mental health counseling and  interventions, parish nursing, legislation.

Secondary Care Focus: - the diagnosis and treatment of  illness. The most common services used and also  the most expensive (along with tertiary  care). Settings:   physician offices, HMOs,  hospital emergency departments,  inpatient settings, urgent care centers,  occupational health clinics.

Tertiary Care Focus:   treatment of serious illness or  injury Settings:  emergency rooms, hospitals  (intensive care units), psychiatric facilities

Restorative Care Focus:   to help individuals to regain  maximal functional status and to enhance  the quality of life. Settings:  cardiovascular, musculoskeletal  and pulmonary rehabilitation, drug  rehabilitation, the home. Increase in use of restorative care due to  earlier discharge from hospital.

Continuing Care Focus:  providing a variety of health,  personal and social services over a  prolonged period of time.
