Logan Hill World Drama The Importance of being Earnest In “The Importance of Being Earnest” the characters all have very different views of the idea of marriage. For example, when Jack apologizes to Gwendolen about telling the truth his whole life, she forgives him and agrees to marry him because she think that he will eventually change. Gwendolen thinks that all men can be changed by a women, she believes that by marrying him she doesn’t have to be worried that he will be the same way forever. She thinks that he will change his ways and that she can help with that. Algernon has some very cynical views of marriage in contrast to Jack who thinks that marriage is a beautiful thing. He believes that it is useless and criticizes his servant Lane’s marriage. He doesn’t think that he will ever get married however when he meets Cecily that view is suddenly changed. He had a preconceived idea of marriage even though he had never been married before and by meeting the right women he realizes that

Cecily is a romantic much like Jack, even before meeting “Ernst” she has created a fantasy life with him in her diary, imaging them getting married and what their life would be like. Lady Bracknell views marriage as a business proposal. She has a interview question already thought of when she interviews Jack after he proposes to Gwendolen. She thinks that you must have the right social standing and income to be married and doesn’t think marriage has anything to do with love. Even the Servant Lane is married, at first he thinks that marriage is a very pleasant thing but alter confesses that his own marriage is not going very well and admits that his marriage is actually over. He doesn’t take marriage and the commitment part of it very seriously and gives up on the marriage between him and his wife easily....
