Pharmacology The science of drug effects Drug A chemical that inter acts with a living organism and alters it activity. -Used in diagnosing, treating, or preventing a disease or other medical conditions Chemical Name Is the exact description of the drug's chemical composition and molecular structure. (Rarely used in nursing) Generic (Nonproprietary) Name The Official Name that is listed in publications like USP. Similar to chemical name, but simpler. Brand (Trade or Proprietary) Name Begins with a capital letter and sometimes has a registration mark. -Advil, Nuprin, and Motrin are all brand names for ibuprofen. Prescription Drugs Require a written order from a healthcare provider who is lisle by the state to prescribe or dispense drugs Nonprescription or Over the Counter (OTC) Drugs that may be purchased without a prescription and are assumed to be safe for the general population if consumers follow the manufacturer's directions. -Some nonprescription drugs are OTC at lose doses but require a prescription at higher doses Basic Drug Classification Characteristics -Usage- why the drug is used -Body System- where the drug works -Chemical or pharmacological class- what the drug is made of *A drug can be placed in more than one category in a classification system and can act on more than one body system as well What Mechanisms Promote Drug Quality and Safety? Reliable sources of drug information, state and federal regulations and standards controlling drug administration, and a variety of systems for storing and distributing medications in healthcare agencies.
