Notes Diagnoses & Therapeutics III RESPIRATORY DISORDERS PFT Measurements FVC – maximum amount of expiration FEV1 – volume expired in the first second of maximal expiration – normally at least 80% of FVC FEF25-75% - average expired flow in middle half of FVC maneuver TLC – total lung capacity PEF – peak expiratory flow FEV1 Done after a maximal inspiration. Is a useful measure of how quickly full lungs can be emptied. FEF25-75% is regarded as a more sensitive measure of small airway narrowing than FEV1. Unfortunately FEF25-75% has a wide range of normality, is less reproducible than FEV1, and is difficult to interpret if the VC (or FVC) is reduced or increased. TLC – special testing only. Is FVC + residual volume (some air stays in to keep lungs from sticking together). This never gets exhaled. PEF (peak expiratory flow) is the maximal expiratory flow rate achieved and this occurs

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
