Ch. 6 Study Guide: “The Duel for North America” 1. The English and French both desired to increase the size of their American colonies. France was a latecomer to the New World, and scrambled to acquire territory. Their expanding borders clashed with those of Spanish and English colonies, setting off a series of wars. In King George’s War the English captured the French outpost of Louisburg, but the peace treaty returned it to the French. This outraged English colonists, who were proud of their great victory. This tension burst into battle in the contested Ohio Valley, where Colonel George Washington’s troops fired the first shots of the Seven Years War. 2.
