CASE ONE As the newly appointed leader of an international consulting team charged with evaluating the acquisition of a multinational corporation I am afraid of my team underperforming. Due to this I have decided to implement some drastic measures to ensure we stay on task, mainly daily updates and multiple meetings where group members are required to update me as to their progress. Additionally, I have been micromanaging every aspect of the project as I don’t fully trust the competencies of all the group members. It seems to be going well as none of the members have spoken up -- however the body language of some of the individuals make me wonder if my team members are happy. While none of the individual team members have spoken up, I wonder what their perspectives are on my management style. What signs should I be watching for and how would they be communicating to me that they are unhappy? As a Finnish participant of the international consulting team, I appreciate the directness of the manager. In the Finnish culture, things are communicated directly rather than between lines, so I might not even get indirect hints or messages. However in
