Dr. Steele Rhetoric A w/ HSF November 6, 2010 Culture through Custom Purpose : To share a custom that I practice in one of my communities and discuss how it is socially relevant to the context of this class. Thesis : The tradition I chose to talk about is Chinese New Year within the Chinese community as well as more specifically within my immediate family. How this occasion is celebrated defines my heritage and my family; the culture’s beliefs are wonderfully portrayed in the attitudes and actions of those who observe these festivities. Despite everything happening for this one single reason, the way it is done varies for each community. My family’s customs for Chinese New Year is much different than those practiced in China Town in New York City or in Beijing, yet they all possess the same enthusiasm and devotion for the culture.
