Jeongsoo Kim AMS 3300.001 Reading Questions for November 21 st 1) Sports were very important to television producers in the 1950’s because sports programs attracted male viewers and television was the quickest medium to the primary market so it was ideal to advertise male products such as beer, cigars, cigarettes, razor blades, cars, and insurance during sports programs. Sports programming grew because sports organically provided heroes, villains, plots, and storylines. Boxing was especially well suited for television because, unlike baseball and football, the camera was able to fully capture all the action that happened in the ring and boxing required little knowledge of the rules so it appealed to casual viewers as well. 2) The gangster element in professional boxing was that many boxers, promoters, and managers in boxing had ties to the mob and have criminal histories. The problem with boxing in the 1950’s and 1960’s was that it was seen as a violent sport with the deaths that occurred during the matches. In addition, it caused long term brain trauma.
