Philosophy 101 May 29, 2013 Pascal’s Wager • preferences • utility gained from it • it’s a good bet to believe God exists Problem of Evil • P1: if God exists, then God is all powerful and all good • P2: if God is all powerful and all good, then there should be no evil • P3: there is evil (suffering/torture/pain) • C: God does not exists • this argument is valid (if all premises are true, then conclusion must be true) • soundness: valid and all true premises • P1: if P then Q • P2: if Q then R • P3: not R • C: not P • free will defense - P2 is false, we have free will (higher order good) and people sometimes freely choose to do evil/bad stuff • worry: if we have free will does that mean God is not all powerful • P1: if God exists, God is all powerful and good • P2: if God is all powerful and good, then there would be no more evil then is a result of human free will (or character or soul building) • P3: there is more evil in the world than that which is a result of free will

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
