Josh Eusebio Hoag Writing January 23, 2014 Hardships Dealt Along the Way As an athlete the last thing I wanted to smell was the excessively sanitized room of a doctors office and I certainly did not ever want to hear those two horrific words that could possible end my soccer career. I’m sorry .” As I was still in complete shock the doctor continued to point out the fault-like crack running through one of the bones in my left foot. The word fractured shot out of my doctor’s mouth and hit my chest like a sack of bricks. Many hardships people face in their lives can end up being magnificent blessings. In my instance a particular hardship seemed like the end of the world, but in fact it was the beginning of a new me. Soccer season was in full swing and I was having a particularly great season. My aspiration for pursuing soccer into college was more than just a possibility; it was inevitable. Every physical attribute I possessed was improving daily; I was a man among boys. Soccer was no longer just a hobby or a sport it was a full-fledged way of life and to top it all off I was walking into my senior year of high school. Life as I knew it was perfect. My confidence level was like that of Ricky Bobby before his career ending crash. But in a matter of milliseconds my world was turned upside down. My left navicular bone was completely fractured through and through. Everything I had ever been working for was dipped into a barrel full of fish chum and thrown into a tank full of hungry tiger sharks. Little did I know that this tragedy would open up more doors that it would close.

In this grim time period my eyes were opened to the marvelous beauty that lay all around me. The greatness of God gleamed into my life and who I was before was tossed out the door. I was dropped into an ocean of grace and given the opportunity to pursue my passion for soccer once again, and I met and chased the most beautiful girl I have ever laid my eyes on and was granted the relationship of a lifetime.
