Plato born into a wealth Athenian family in 428 BCE follower of Socrates, who was executed in 299 BCE served as tutor to Dionysus II of Syracuse Founded the Academy in 288 BCE where he was the teacher of Aristotle Held that the world of appearance is a weak copy of a greater, more perfect world of external, ideal forms Hence his distinction between overvable objects that appear beautiful (good, just, big etc.) and the true form of beauty (goodness, justice, bigness, etc) Held that the soul is separate from and corrupted by the body Suggested that the ideal society would be divided into workers and rulers Died after a weeding fest Plato’s writings Early period o Including Apology, Carhmides, Crito, Euthyphro, Early middle period o Corgias, Meno, Phaedo, Protagoras, Symposium Later Middel o Including Republic, Phaedrus, Parmenides, Theaetetus Late Including Timaeus, Critias, Sophis Plato’s Theaetetus Protagoras claims that “Man is the measure of all things”
