Josh Eusebio Prof. Hoag 3.7.14 American Dream By: Switchfoot “When success is equated with excess, the ambition for excess wrecks us.” This is a powerful quote taken from the song “American Dream” by Switchfoot, written by John Foreman. In this song the American Dream is described as a terrible and enslaving cycle where people are caught and never released again to live an impactful life. Success has been broken and redefined as something completely opposite of what it should be. I am a firm believer that success is not what you have but rather what you do, and I think John Foreman agrees with me. People now a days buy into the lie that success is purely about materialistic stuff that has no meaning. Authors Harlon. L Dalton and Horatio Alger try to define what success is and fail miserable because hard work and a number of other factors is not a true and sincere definition of success.
