The Professional Lifeguard Your primary responsibility as a lifeguard is to help ensure patron safety and protect lives Decision making : o Decision making is an important component of lifeguarding o An emergency action plan (EAP) can help you to act quickly o In non-emergency situations, you can take more time in deciding how to act Legal Considerations o Lifeguards need to understand the legal principles involved in being a professional rescuer Standard of care Negligence Abandonment Duty to act Confidentiality Documentation Consent Refusal of care Training: o Completing the course does not guarantee employment o Employers may require their own employment evaluation o Skills learned need to be practiced Being part of a team o Lifeguards must communicate and work together effectively as a team
