Fisher-Edelglass 1 Zachary Fisher-Edelglass 15 April 2013 EN102 Professor Hays I Am Monster For centuries, monsters have been an essential element of society. One of the best ex- amples is a vampire, a creature which has had a significant presence in pop culture. Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend provides an interesting perspective on what makes a monster, allowing readers to see that a monster is simply the “other” through the characters of Robert Neville. This is proven by applying Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s Monster Culture (Seven Theses) to how the char- acters of Robert Neville and the vampires are depicted. Many people can only see their own per- spective, and fail to recognize how that “other” is viewing them. Society constantly comes up with reasoning for why something is a monster. But with all the bad things society brings to the world can not say that society is not in fact creating these monsters. Monsters have always played a significant role in many cultures. They are the embodi- ment of the fears that a society has.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
