CJ403 Week 5 Discussion Post Can the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico be categorized as a white collar crime? Explain. The BP oil spill can without a doubt be categorized as a white collar crime. On page 127 of our book it states, “accidents due to negligence and employers failing to warn employees about hazardous conditions” can result in white collar crimes. BP knew the “flow rate was three time higher than initial claims by the company” and BP was also intentionally and willfully making “cost-cutting decisions while simultaneously lacking a system to ensure well safety”. (Wikepedia.com) Another interesting note, our reading states that the “key property of white collar offending is the spatial separation of victim and offender”. (P129) This statement supports that BP oil spill being classified as a white collar crime because none of the ‘offenders’ were listed as being present when the explosion occurred; furthering the “callous disregard for the safety of workers” and in this instance the environment. (P131)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
